Wathene Young began her career in Tulsa Public Schools, teaching speech and drama before developing and administrating Indian Education programs. Later, she became an intern coordinator at Northeastern State University. During her career, Wathene has created teacher training programs for American Indian students, including programs for master’s degrees and doctoral degrees. She was also a founder, board member, and long-time volunteer for the National Indian Youth Leadership Program in New Mexico.
Wathene was one of the founders of the American Indian Resource Center and served as Executive Director from 1983 to 2016. During her tenure, she has directed educational and leadership development programs for American Indian youth in urban and rural settings.
- Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be a member of a federally recognized tribe verified by a Certificate Degree of Indian Blood issued by the Federal Government, or tribal enrollment identification.
- Must be a high school senior from one of the following counties: Adair, Cherokee, Delaware, Mayes, Muskogee, Nowata, Rogers, or Sequoyah.
- Must be enrolled as a full-time student seeking a college degree or technical certificate at an accredited institution (for profit institutions prohibited i.e. University of Phoenix).
- A 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher is required.
